taking a break in an ashcroft motel— on the road to ottawa, 1970
forty-three years ago dennis lorene koko and i— on the way to ottawa to install and open the bc almanac exhibition. having no money to speak of we made arrangements to do the 3000 mile trip in a "drive-away" car which in this case was a relatively new ford fairlane. with a drive-away you are transporting someones car across the country while they fly. the client supplies gas and maintenance money for the trip— so we got to travel for free. i wanted to make something out of this adventure so as we cruised for five days along the trans-canada we took turns recording the continuously varied view of canada streaming past the car windows. later the resulting series of 300 or so images became material for my 1970 publication entitled Cross Canada. for the past several months i have been re-visiting this photo-mapping project in preparation for its release as an installation on-line.
