Interactive installation, Electrical Connection exhibition, Vancouver Art Gallery, April 1969

Additional Details

Tunnel was exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of the Intermedia exhibition Electrical Connection (April 7-13,1969). The 35’ tunnel installation was constructed with custom with corrugated cardboard boxes, stacked and glued. To facilitate the transportation and installation of Tunnel it was fabricated at the Vancouver Intermedia’s Beatty Street studios in four foot modules. The length of the structure was slightly curved in order to block the view of one end from the other. Inside the tunnel, illumination was provided by a string of low wattage bare incandescent bulbs running the length of the ceiling. The audience navigated through the tunnel individually on a wheelchair along a built-in metal track. The experience of the work reflected the type of sensory deprivation and isolation that one might experience in an empty underground parking garage.
