Matrix was presented as part of the 1968 Intermedia exhibition Intermedia Nights at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The installation of the piece involved 100, 40” high, 30” diameter, flexible corrugated cardboard tubes and a podium. For the performance in a darkened gallery, while audience members occupied the corrugated cardboard tubes as if isolated in a cocoon, James Barber presented a program of his spoken poetry combined with live and recorded music music along with the introduction of a variety of smells ranging from that of barbecue to sandalwood.
